Must Have Survival Gear

As you begin preparing for your venture into the great outdoors, having the proper survival gear should be at the top of your list. If you were faced with the worst case scenario, would you have the essentials that it takes to survive?

To make the search more simple, most of us look to a kit that is already packaged with tools and assume it is the best. If you are considering purchasing a survival kit because it is “the top of the line”, does it actually have items in it that you know how to use? A good kit is only as good as its user. In a survival situation, a tool is only useful if you know how to properly use it. Educate yourself on the most vital gear to have with you. Also, you will more than likely need to customize your gear to your needs. For example, if you are allergic to bees, you will need to have an epinephrine shot. Next, consider your location. Make sure your survival gear matches your environment. You won’t need swamp gear if you are heading to the cold elements of Alaska.

First and foremost in a survival situation, we need water. We lose water by sweating, breathing and even digesting our food. We need to rehydrate our bodies by consuming foods that contain water and drinking fluids. More than likely when you are participating in your favorite outdoor hobby, you will not have an endless supply of water bottles. Who would want to carry that load? More and more survivalists are turning to water purification kits. Filtering water sources found in the wild removes disease causing parasites, waterborne bacteria and other contaminants. A portable water filter pump is the perfect companion to provide you with safe drinking water whenever you would need it.

Next, do you have the tools and knowledge of building a fire? Having flint and steel, a type of tinder and some basic fire starting experience will assure you get the flame going. The benefits of fire can range from providing us with warmth to warding off predators.

Make sure your backpack is equipped with a good survival knife. Here are some tips for finding the best knife:
Fixed Blade- The knife you choose needs to be durable. Folding knives are not able to take the abuse, therefore should not be your primary knife. Also, make sure it comes with a full tang. This means the blade runs through the end of the knife’s handle.
Plain Edge Blade- Your main survival knife should have a plain edge. Out in the wilderness, you will be able to sharpen it easier than a serrated edge.
Handle- It should feel comfortable in your hand. If you are going to be using it often, you don’t want to cause yourself discomfort with the possibility of blistering. Avoid plastic or hollow handles. The chances of them breaking is very high.

On your next camping trip, you can harness the power of the sun. Solar power can cook our food, boil our water and charge our devices. As long as the sun is out, no matter the temperature, you can cook meals with a solar oven bag. In 30 minutes, you can boil hot water in a solar kettle. Then relaxing by the campfire you started will be even better with your hot cup of coffee.
